Phillip's 2019 Cairns to Cooktown ride for FNQHF

Update: the ride is done and the raffle is drawn. The clock was won by Lynne K (Ayr) who has sponsored me every year since 2011. Thanks Lynne.

For those interested in data from the ride, the speed and elevation graphs are available (graph 3 shows the Desailly Range climb and  Byerstown Range descent). The bike had a rear wheel spoke break after Mt Molloy (possibly caused by a bad bump on the bridge at Mt Molloy) and the catch up ride (near the 100km point) gave me a "rider blow out" that took a day to recover from.

Cycling Yogis reach Cooktown

I am again riding in support of the FNQ Hospital Fund Cardiac Challenge (please click here to sponsor me or visit  https://is.gd/XJcV1y). This web page describes our group, the fund raising trivia night, a raffle prize for my sponsors, the ride challenges, and there is a collection of sponsor comments at the very end.

  • This year, 4 of us have again formed a group called Cycling Yogis which is comprised of Akemi, Bob, Christal and me (most of us met through yoga ... except for Bob who refuses to do any yoga).

Training on the Lake Morris Road
  • I have a raffle to thank my sponsors and this year, the prize is non-alcoholic. All supporters are entered into a raffle for a great hand crafted NTP clock which synchronises itself to an atomic accuracy time reference. Every dollar donated gets you an entry i.e. your number of entries is proportional to the donated amount. These clocks have been tested on quite a few family members, and none have been harmed. In fact, they report being able to set-and-forget the clocks and that they always know the exact time, so that is good. You just plug it in, enter your home wifi info, and it then just works. Some CompSci info: the raffle process uses arc4random_uniform() like in this C++ program to obtain a fair result.

  • The FNQHF folks have prepared this description of the challenges:
    • Previous highlights of my rides: tasty fruit (Mareeba), thirst quenching drinks (Mt Carbine), P&C committee and a Pony Club fundraising meals and drinks at Lakeland, and the finale dinner at the Cooktown High School hall;
    • Bananas & muesli bars;
    • Other highlights: Kuranda Range climb, Desailly Range climb, and the Byerstown Range (downhill)! These links show you some of the very attractive scenery;
    • And in Lakeland, we get to see Australia's first grid connected battery and solar farm at what is a "leaf node" or end-point of the power grid, so in effect it has extra responsibility for network stability.
    • Special thanks to Miguel Antequra at Rusty's Markets for all of the bananas!
    • Previous events:
      • We have (had) a Pub Trivia Night scheduled at 6:30pm for 7pm Thursday July 25, at the Barron River Hotel, 35 Stratford Street, Stratford (map). It is a great night for families (and trivia nerds), and note that we play and dine next to the children play area. Click here for the flyer.
      • The entry fee is $10 per person, all of which goes to the FNQHF Cardiac Challenge;
      • Please phone 40551213 to book a team. Booking is not essential but it does give the venue an idea of numbers (you can also just let me know if you're coming but have not organised a team).
      • And please form teams and brings your friends!

      Alan L, Cairns: Hi Phillip, glad to donate again and hope you have a great ride.
      Thanks Alan. We have more yoga expertise this year too.

      Joan M, Townsville: Good luck with the ride, Phillip. I'm sure it will be fun again this year.
      Thank you, and thanks in advance for the meals on the ride.
      Joan M: If I do win I might take a bottle of RUM instead. RUM is always acceptable. It is a good prize. Mother.
      Yes mother ...

      Michael R, Tablelands: Here's a small contribution. Thanks for your efforts on this!
      Thanks Michael. If that work travel fits in, I hope you can make the (very cultural) Trivia Night!

      Bravo Bravo, ???: Glad to be able to contribute a small part towards your goal. Hope you reach it in 2019!
      Thank you, whoever you are! (I'll have to track you down if you win the clock)

      Nat, Cairns: Love your web page.....good on you Phil....you do a fantastic job!
      Thanks Nat. Oh, I believe we might have some new photos to add from the original 2013 team doing a practice ride up the Lake Morris road :-)

      E R, Innisfail:
      Thanks. With a bit of luck, maybe the raffle will reward a northern coastal Ridd instead of those mountain dwellers.

      Peter B, Sunny Coast: Go frit young fella. Go for the gold pedallion.
      Thanks Peter but what exactly is a "frit". The dictionary lists "mixture of silica and fluxes" (I am fond of silicon) and then also "frightened", so yes I'll peddle like crazy!

      Graham W, Townsville: Go Miriwinni (aka Mirriwinni) Marvel!
      Thanks Graham. By the way, if you take up this bicycling challenge, you realise you could fish on arrival in Cooktown.

      Hamish T, ???: My dad says that I should support good causes, and that this is a very good cause.
      Hello Thank you, Hamish T, whoever you are. I hope it is easy to find you (or your father) if you win the clock.

      Peter E, Melbourne: Good luck!
      Hey, thanks for the support. I've even documented the raffle prize this year!

      Larry Hore: ?
      So my sponsor is silent and strong. Thanks Larry. I still reckon you'd enjoy the cycling up past Mt Molloy, where we get eye-to-eye with large bovine quadrupeds while avoiding real and virtual cattle grids.

      Lynne K, Ayr: Have a great time
      Thanks Lynne.

      Tony C, Great Sandy Desert: No doubt you will need to eat some pie (the baked type or the humble type) on this trip, so here is one for you.
      Tony C, Great Sandy Desert: And now my proper donation seeing as my last one did not display correctly ??
      Yes, it is sad about the "14" in 3.14(1592653589793). I had the same disappointment once when donating e^1 (the CC web site just does not do irrational numbers justice). Thanks for thinking of me while in the desert!

      Andrew & Noreen, Perth: You should know the route by heart by now.
      Well, there are now some familiar looking ant hills along the way but I still find getting to the end feels exactly the same (i.e. big relief). Thank again.

      Loretta & Andrew M, Mirriwinni: Hey cousin, we're managing to donate before the ride this time ... so we hope the ride goes well! (by the way, we can advise on chemical compounds for treating physical injuries afterwards ... not so sure about performance enhancement :-)
      Thank you!

      Ken Mc, Mareeba:
      Hi Ken, now if you win the clock you'll have a permanent reminder to get that bike out. Thank you and keep an eye out for us this Saturday morning!

      JamesW, Canberra: I'm with Tony, I know how much sugar I'd need to do what you're planning today! Have a great pedal mate :)
      Thanks Dr W! And did you know that we also use fermented fluids for performance enhancement (via bugs that eat the sugar in a fully instrumented automatically controlled industrial scale ... factory).

      Rebecca M, Sydney: Carpe Viam ! May the tarmac be smooth, the winds fair and the stock truck behind you.
      Well, I hadn't heard that phrase before but now I know. We had some great tail winds on this ride, with moderate temperatures. Unfortunately, I had a bit of a burn out after some crazy catch up cycling following a broken spoke on day 1 (felt better by the end!). Thank you.

      Jan G, Melbourne (or somewhere in the northern hemisphere):  Go Phillip!
      All the Cycling Yogis (and 1) arrived home safely, and the new tent did not leak in the light rain in Cooktown. We all ended up having good rides. Thanks you.

      Toni W, Sydney: Amazing
      Thank you for your support and some modulus maths to tidy up that total (actually, a different Tony donated a π amount at one stage so the total has been attempting irrationality for quite a while). Since the ride, the backside now feels better and I've ceremoniously tossed one pair of cycling shorts in the bin... and repaired a wheel spoke.

      Paul S, Cairns:  Go Phil, Keep up the Good Work.. :-)
      Thanks Paul. And I need to get you doing spin classes and then ...
       p.s.1 I think I'll have to put you in next year's raffle.
      p.s.2 I guess I'll have to do that 10th ride in CC2020!
      p.s.3 So, are you interested?
