Raffle result and other info: 2013 Cardiac Challenge Cairns to Cooktown ride

2013 Raffle news

The two winners of the beverage raffle are Doris Pierce and Jan Dunphy, both of Cairns. Due to a certain level of busy-ness in my life at the end of 2013, I was not able to visit my highly trustworthy relatives in Mirriwinni to draw the prizes so a raffle winner program (c++) was written and used to give this result:

Using News Corp for noise source ...
  Number of donors: 31
  Winner 1: Doris Pierce, Cairns
  Winner 2: Jan Dunphy, Cairns

Thanks to all supporters and my fellow riders Christal, Natalie, and Annett(!).
And please check out our 2014 Cycling Yogis.

Notes: 1) Petter Eccles has not won a prize this year (surprising, actually); 2) Vito & Melina Musumeci will hopefully contribute an action shot when returning to pick the 2014 prize winners.

The Cardiac Challenge ride generates funds for use by the Cairns Base Hospital.
Here is some info on 2013 practice rides and sponsors please add comments at the bottom of this page.

Hi,

Remember my email asking for volunteers to come ride with me in the 2013 Cardiac Challenge, in which I described ride facts, info that was slightly factual, benefits, and stuff I made up?

Everyone thanked for assistance last year received the call.

Well three people from Cairns are joining me and we have formed the Cycling Yogis team. Why this name? ... as usual, the data speaks for itself:
  • number of family members who joined: 0
  • number of engineers I've worked with who joined: 0
  • number of engineers or science students I've taught who joined: 0
  • number of Cairns ashtanga people in our team: 4!!!
Please meet the Cycling Yogis team:

Christal, Natalie, Annett and Phillip == Cycling Yogis

We have been upgrading bicycles and bodies, with training rides up to Copperlode Dam west of Cairns (45km) and out to Second Beach near Yarrabah (90km). Now we ask for your 2013 sponsorship.

As in 2012, there are overnight stops at Mt Carbine and Lakeland Downs where all manner of cultural highlights await. We also have the Kuranda and Desailly Ranges for some extra "challenge". Mleading sponsor (TheMother) is again volunteering in the support crew (not riding!) and she even has some cousins helping.

And I'm offering inducements. There are a couple of six-packs of pale ale (e.g. Coopers, 150-lashes, Little Creatures, & Fat Yak options) and Taylors Shiraz wines# which will be raffled.

Everyone who supports any Cycling Yogis team member goes into the draw. Even supporter Petter Eccles who has won a prize two years in a row! And of course if you won a bicycle mud guard (sorry Michael, Andrew, Lynne, Peter) or a computer OS (sorry Evan) or something less bubbly in a previous year, now is your chance to win something that you'll (really) enjoy.

So ... I'm hoping you'll support this keen and obviously fit team for their ride to Cooktown. Please use this team link to select from our Cardiac Challenge donation web links, pick one of us to support, and go into the draw. Your Fat Yak or multiple lashes are waiting.

If you have any questions, just email me (see here for a summary of the donation process).

Thank you,
Dr Phil

Note: receipts (sample) are emailed but please tell me if you donate anonymously so I can thank you (and enter you secretly in the raffle).

# FYI: the Kellermeister wines are not being raffled this year due to some unexpected local consumer exuberance, meaning I have no stocks left at home. And no, I will not be offering Hop Hog India pale ale or Gage Roads atomic pale ale even though searches reveal they do exist. On the other hand, any geek is welcome to swap an alcohol prize for a copy of PCBSD in order to enhance their life (especially my students who received academic or project advice at JCU, RMIT or ADFA ... Hi Webby).

Please post any comments here. Here is a copy of earlier sponsor comments:

Joan Musumeci, Townsville: I don't envy you the hard ride. It's for a good cause so at the same time, I hope you have as much fun as possible.

- Thanks.

Andrew Musumeci, Mirriwinni: We will be sure to wave & turn down the air conditioning as we drive passed this year..."

- Thank you cousins.

Evan Greensmith, Melbourne: Good luck Phil! From Dikla as well, we are sure you're going to enjoy your ride.

- We should have a great time. You should both head north this time next year :-)

Jan Dunphy, Cairns: This year I'm early! Peddle safely and watch out for road bumps (especially any with 4 legs).

- Thank you Sheridan News!

Ulrich Walter, Idstein: This donation comes from Germany to our friend Phillip.

- Thank Ulrich and Martina.

Emmy Kerrigan, Cairns: Good luck with the Challenge, Dr Phil. Be safe!

- Thank you Emmy. We're all aiming to stay in one piece.

Anonymous: Want to see you pick up the pace this year!

- Hi Anonymous ... so did you really watch the ride last year?

Andrew Duncan, Perth: Don't get too saddle sore Phillip

- No worries Andrew ... I now have a Selle Royal Respiro and it is quite comfortable (only the Italians would think to design an air scoop under the seat front for better bottom cooling!).

Julie Vidler, Mackay:

- Thanks Julie.

Chris Gaskett, Kagawa: Please ask your yogi crew to generate some Melbourne house buying and moving karma for us.

- OK, we're on to it.

Oliver Bacchus: I always fly around the cape for my surveying work ... but I really hope you all enjoy your 2-wheeled transport :-)

- Thank you Cairns Ashtanga!

Peter Ridd, Townsville:

- Thanks Peter.

Peter Beinssen, Minyama: All you want to do is ride around Phillip. Ride Phillip ride. Stay safe. Look after your team members. SLEEP at night. Enjoy the pain as well as the pleasure.

- Message received Peter, but what is this pain you speak of and when will you be starting your yoga practice? Oh yes, my cycling yogis will be well looked after. Thanks.

Doris Pierce, Cairns: Have a great ride!

- Thanks Doris. I'm sure you're fit enough to join us next year :-)

Sponsorship and comments from the week before the ride

Julie Woodward, Cairns:

- Thanks Julie. I reckon there is the makings of a team roaming about JCU building A1 ...

Andrew Noske, San Francisco: Way to represent Dr Phil! :)

- Thanks Noske. BTW I'll be logging the ride with the Google My Tracks app, as one does ...

Brad Bloomfield, Melbourne: Good luck with the ride.

- Thanks Brad. If I remember correctly, you have MTB gear ... so fit it with slicks and you too can ride to Cooktown in 2014!

Robert Karran, Cairns: Look after those girls mate! Or you will be in all sorts of trouble?

- Dear Bob, the other cycling yogis are mature yogis who definitely can look after themselves. I might be worried about me though ... Thanks for volunteering to come and collect us.

Noreen Kirkman, Perth: Enjoy the ride!

- Thanks Noreen. Maybe you and Andrew can keep in mind that tandem bikes offer a very good power to weight ratio (and Elaine Ridd recalls that the front cyclist cannot easily check on the peddling efforts of the passenger).

Jan Greensmith, Melbourne: Best wishes Phillip. Hope you enjoy a carefree journey.

- Thanks Jan and Don. Having a team has been a lot of fun so far although my other team members have made me do quite a few more rides up to Lake Morris than I had (ever) intended. Last Sunday, I just had to call a time out. The next time I see Lake Morris, it will be from a car.

Phil And Nerida Turner, Townsville: This is a good thing you all do :-) Keep safe and enjoy the ride.

- Thank you (again). Hey I reckon the time might be right for a Tully originated team in the Cardiac Challenge. Or if you were to take up yoga, you could join this team :-)

Lynne Kupke, Ayr: Wishing you a safe and fun ride.

- Thanks Lynne. My mother is arriving tomorrow, refreshed after the beach holiday she had (you're doing good), so we should all be set by Friday.

John Ridd, Innisfail: Phil. Don't just sit there - pedal.

- Thanks Ridds. Will try this peddling thing you talk of, unless distracted by the cultural ... I mean culinary, delights that await us on the ride. This ride will suffer culturally ... no AFL final on the Saturday when we are in Mt Carbine!

Hamish Moffatt, Melbourne: Have a great ride.

Hi Hamish, no snowcapped mountains for us (unlike some of your rides!) but we do see Kuranda range with its rainforest plus other areas of beauty. Thanks!

Aidan Paget, Cairns: Thanks Aidan.

Rebecca Morcom, Sydney: Have fun, do good.... Do better than the average bear :)

Thanks Rebecca. The ride was hard but very enjoyable. All yogis proved much better than any average bear!

Peter Eccles, Melbourne: Thanks Peter

Graham Woods, Townsville: Goodbye Wine, Women & Song! Hello Training, Sweat & Dedication.

Hi Graham. Well it is true that we only drank wine on the last 2 nights (out of 3). But we really had a great time. Would you believe even the early morning car ride back seemed great ... in those soft seats with aircon ... Maybe you and Camilla need some cardiac challenge?

Paul Softa, Cairns: I knew you could make it... Not sure about those tights Though.. ;-)

Hi Paul, my tights are fine but come talk to me about safe men's bicycle seats someday! Thanks for your timely support - we now have an amazing set of numbers :-)

Rohit Jain, Sydney: Thanks Rohit

Mai Long, Boston: Way to go Phillip!

Hi Mai, thanks for the support and well wishes. Definitely due for a trip north soon!
