Phillip's 2023 Cairns to Cooktown ride for FNQHF

Cardiac Challenge 2023

I completed the ride! Clock draw will be done during October. Our team raised the 4th highest amount of all teams! Thank you to all supporters.

Update (5-Dec-2023): Coralie Venus has won the clock.

Prize handover (4-Feb-2024): Coralie preferred a GPS version of the clock so I built her one and handed it over (it hadn't synced with a satellite when the photo was taken).

Thanks to everyone who helped and sponsored us. Bob and Shaun raised a huge amount this year and we achieved our highest ever contribution to the Hospital Foundation.

Ride 13 for FNQHF

I am again riding in support of Cairns Hospital (FNQ Hospital Foundation) from Cairns to Cooktown, commencing 16 September 2023, and am seeking donations. The route  is approx. 330km in total and some of the highlights are the Kuranda Range climb, the steep Desailly Range climb, and the rapid Byerstown Range descent. Our team of "Cycling Yogis" includes Bob Karran, Christal Brooks, Akemi Fukatsu, and Shaun Karran (sadly, not all practice yoga).

To reward my supporters (please donate), I am raffling a clock but this year we are going "retro". This clock uses one of the original RaspberryPi computer boards hence the "retro" but it will still automatically lock into an atomic clock for decent accuracy.

RETRO atomic clock for 2023
(display will have greater contrast when in a case)

Events We ran a pub Trivia Night on the 1st of August 6:30pm at the Barron River Hotel (flyer). It was a new format of Trivia with electronic answering ... it worked well.

How to donate: When using the donation web page, the process may require you to enter the recipient name which is not as easy as last year but it does work. Please look for the "Make a donation" link at   https://fnqhffundraising.fnqhf.org.au/cardiacchallenge2023/m/e4cb04/

Alternative prize: There is some interest in the GPS based clock built for the 2022 raffle. If you win and are particularly interested in this clock that uses satellite data for time, please let me know!

p.s. Yikes! Ride #13.

Ride Info
  • This route map which was provided for my first ride in 2011 and shows extra detail when zoomed in.
    • Raffle draw details: the raffle process uses arc4random_uniform() like in this C++ program to obtain a fair result.

Denise C, Cairns: Good luck and enjoy the ride
Thank you for your support. The ride also means I am building up knowledge of Cape York ... one ant hill at a time.

Richard S, Sydney Pedal well and enjoy the ride
Dear Zebra Shark, Thank you for your support!

Alan L, Cairns Good luck for the ride. Last year's web site donation was much easier :-(
Thanks for your effort Alan! (and for discovering a supporter must not select the rider and their team on the donation page)

    Peter B, Brisbane Good luck
    Thanks Peter

Loretta M, Babinda: May the wind be at your back as you ride Cousin!
Thanks Loretta. And yes there is still time for others to join our ride (I imagine a new group ... Cycling Musumeci's).

Robyn F, Cairns: Thank you. And if you like Trivia Nights at pubs, well keep August 1 free.

Peter E, Melbourne I hope all goes well with the ride. Sending the usual support from the southern lands!
Thanks Peter. I've started "spin" classes this year to reverse a decline in riding stamina - will have experimental results in 11 weeks.

    Graham W, Townsville: More inspiration!
Thanks Graham. That clunky web site only allows comments after the receipt ... I'm seeing less comments (and sarcasm) this year.

Andrew L, Paris: Hope the big ride goes well - and your team all scores “home runs”!
Thanks Andrew. Thinking of cycling - you are watching Le Tour at the moment, right?

Joan M, Townsville: Wish you well for the 13th time on the Cardiac Challenge Ride, Phillip. Good luck and enjoy it. Mother
Thanks. We'll miss you (speaking for me, Bob, and Christal in particular ... after great service at breakfasts). The year when you were volunteering with cousins, a brother, and other family was very special.

Andrew D, Perth: Enjoy the ride
Thanks Andrew! I'm doing extra training this year and hoping to survive the ride in better shape.

    Coralie V, Cairns: Thanks Coralie!

Larry H, Townsville: Good stuff that you are out there still doing it
Thanks for the support! This year, I've added some gym classes to try to regain some stamina.

Richie B, Cairns: Thanks Richie. I suppose a clock for its time would be quite a good fit!

    Peter A, Townsville: Best wishes
    Thanks uncle.

James W, Canberra #13! Over 4000km of flat, cool climate pedalling... Uber impressive mate :) Go Phil!
Thanks Webby. Yes it does add up (and actually leads to recognising some of the anthills on the route too). Well, we've added a lot of new equipment to the hospital and I've only had a few bicycles wear out...

    Ian S, Canberra Best wishes
Thanks Ian. Obviously if you were to win a clock, it would be mandatory that you receive the GPS version (but I have to warn you that the displayed accuracy can be up to 0.1s slow due to a few design decisions that reduce system complexity).

    Jo B, Townsville: Best wishes.
Thanks Jo. I only recently got rid of a tick 2 weeks ago after it had been enjoying the good life for a few months, and this body was barely working. Anyway, dragged it over the line.

Ken Mc, Mareeba: Good luck (again).
Thanks Ken. The Cardiac Challenge 2023 was challenging for more than just the cardiac part this year. But all the cyclists got to Cooktown without any crashes and the Kuranda and Desailly range climbs were enjoyable once you got to the top. Oh, the Mareeba pineapples at the Rotary park stop were again very sweet this year.

Joan M, Townsville: From mother (tidying up as usual!).
Yes, ok, thanks for getting me to $2000. By the way, your cousin Dot was a volunteer this year (breakfasts). Maybe we need to reform the band...
