Phillip's 2018 Cairns to Cooktown ride for FNQHF

Phillip's 2018 Cairns to Cooktown ride for FNQHF

I am again riding in support of the FNQ Hospital Fund's Cardiac Challenge.
  • The FNQHF folks have prepared this description of each day of the ride route (with video from 2017), and we even have a 2018 menu (scan down for Meals):
    • Some highlights of the ride: tasty fruit (Mareeba), thirst quenching drinks (Mt Carbine), P&C committee and a Pony Club does fundraising meals and drinks at Lakeland, and a finale dinner at the Cooktown High School hall (indoors with real seats...);
    • Bananas & muesli bars;
    • Other highlights: Kuranda Range climb, Desailly Range climb, and the Byerstown Range (downhill)!
  • The Pub Trivia Night is now organised as 6:30pm for 7pm Thursday July 26 at the Barron River Hotel, 35 Stratford Street, Stratford (map). It is a great night for families (and trivia nerds), and note that we play and dine next to the children play area. Click here for the flyer.
    • The entry fee is $10 per person, all of which goes to the FNQHF Cardiac Challenge;
    • Please phone 40551213 to book a team. Booking is not essential but it does give the venue an idea of numbers.
    • And please form teams and brings your friends!
  • Please click here to donate (https://goo.gl/rFrfUV). My supporters are entered into a "thank you" raffle for a good Australian wine (winners have been known to negotiate alternative prizes e.g. xmas cake rum). And the raffle process uses [nerd alert] arc4random_uniform() [end alert] which *BSD and macOS users might recognise in this C++ program.
  • Remember that potential riders have until July 31 to register :-)
  • Raffle Prize for Sponsors
    The prize is a Kellermeister Dry Grown Shiraz ...
    ... and it has been won by Michael Ridd. Thanks to everyone for supporting my ride this year.

Alan from yoga Cairns: glad to be able to support you again. I hope you have a great ride.

Thanks Alan. Yes it will be useful and (hopefully) enjoyable!

Andrew, Perth: It's all good for the legs. Enjoy.

And also the heart and lungs (I hope). Thanks Andrew.

Jerome, Cairns: Straight lines are shorter.

Thanks Jerome. Though sometimes, we just need to follow the bike or car in the lead ... not too much navigation required.

Elaine, Innisfail: > Keep on keeping on Phillip.

Thanks Elaine. I'll also try not to think of paint.

Joan, Townsville ... mother! Another enjoyable bike ride. The best part is arriving in Cooktown on Monday. Best wishes.

Thank you (and thanks in advance for all the fruit bat compatible breakfasts on the ride).

Michael, The Tablelands (or PNG Highlands): Keep up the good work Philip! I hope you reach and exceed your target.

Thanks Michael. I might must mention that you still have until July 31 to consider joining and if you have a mountain bike or hybrid, then you can switch to slick tyres for the road ride.

Graham, Townsville: Remember old EE's never die ... Sorry forgot the rest.

Thanks Graham. Hmm, some kind of dynamic memory error there, by the looks. In need of flash?

Peter, Melbourne: As always, Good Luck Phillip!

Thanks Peter. Hope the modem embedded systems development is going well.

Larry Hore, Townsville: Have a pizza when you get there. They're good.

Thanks Larry. Right now, I can visualise fluids + pizza! BTW I visited Franks Pizza Napoli (aka Pizza Vesuvio) recently ... they're still making great pizza after all these years.

Liz and Wayne, Perth: Enjoy the speccy scenery and great company along the way, and a well deserved beer in Cooktown!

Thanks Liz. I'm expecting a hot ride this year so your predictions are likely 100% correct.

Jan G, Melbourne: Great job Phillip. Best wishes.

Thanks Jan. The bike is ready...

Natalie H, Cairns: Knock’em dead Phil

Thanks Nat. The bike and brain are ready, the body perhaps not (but we'll know this time next week!).

Walter Family, Germany: Have a good bike ride.

Thanks Uli.

Lynne Kupke, Ayr: Have a good weekend.

Thanks Lynne.

Peter Beinssen, Sunny Coast: Beware of parked cars.

And large bovine critters! Actually, they tend to be either slow moving or hanging about under shade so we'll be safe. Thanks for your support.

Ansell family, Townsville: Have a safe trip, a few laughs & finish OK.

Yes I'm hoping it all goes well (had to practice hill climbs recently) and the "social life" of Mt Carbine will bring a few laughs along the way. Thanks for the sponsorship which tipped me over my final target!

Jim, Tiff and Zoe, Cairns: Good on you doing it every year! Glad that I don’t feel the pain!

Thank you. So Zoe, have you got a good bicycle (yet)? It's Time ...

Ken McCormack, Tablelands: Would love to be riding but ...

Thanks Ken! By the way, the fruit spread here in Mareeba is very tasty. [Ken later dropped in to the CC2018 rider regroup and staging point in Mareeba]

Aidan Paget, CNS:

Thanks Aiden.

T Wynne, SYD: Credit to you again Phil.

Yes it is done and there was a bit of shall we call it self-discovery on this ride. The body is starting to need proper preparation as the years build up! Thanks for the support and you are in the raffle for the wine.

Loretta & Andrew M, Mirriwinni: Hey cousin, can we still donate? And we hope the ride went well!

Yes (and here is the evidence). The ride went well and I got better the further I went, but there definitely needs to be preparation next year ... the word "methodical" comes to mind!

p.s. Thanks cousins!
