Phillip's 2017 Cairns to Cooktown ride for FNQHF

Cycling for FNQHF in 2017

News: the ride was great and Joan Musumeci (the mother) has won the raffle. Due to a shortage of rum at her home (occurring at about the same time as xmas cake cooking time), she has chosen a RUM prize. I raised $2011!

Yes, again! If you would like to sponsor my efforts, visit my official fund raising web siteAll sponsors enter my raffle for wine. Last year, sponsor Jan G. won the wine.

In 2017, I am cycling with Christal and Bob but we haven't organised a photo shoot yet.

The 2017 route:
  - starts with a range climb to Kuranda from the new start at Tjapukai,
  - has snacks (fruit!) at Mareeba,
  - probably has annoying head winds from Mareeba to Mt Molley,
  - has very cold nights at Mt Carbine & Lakeland,
  - challenges us with the very challenging range climb at Desailly,
  - supplies BBQ and beer near Lakeland,
  - definitely has real cattle grids and also virtual grids, and
  - usually has large fury animals grazing along the way (2 and 4 legs).

It is ≈330km from Cairns to Cooktown!

Many bananas, many chocolate muesli bars, sometimes many tyres and tubes are consumed by the 2-legged participants.

Raffle Prize for Sponsors

There is just one prize. It is a Kellermeister Dry Grown Shiraz ...

... but if the winner is a child, then we'll organise some sort of small experimental computer for them (so that they instead grow brain cells).

How the draw is conducted: We use arc4random_uniform(), so familiar to *BSD and OS-X users e.g. see this C++ program which randomly select winners. It all just works.

How the prize is delivered: I'll email the winner with news and either post the wine or organise a local pickup (some stores now stock Kellermeister wines so it is becoming easier). If you've obfuscated your ID by being an anonymous supporter or for example naming yourself after a helicopter or radio channel number, I'll apply my best detective skills (but might eventually have to email everyone to let the winner know).

Thanks mother :-)

Greensmith family, Melbourne Well done Philip. Another Challenge! Best wishes Jan and Don

Thanks Jan!

Alan L, Cairns: I hope you have a great ride again. See you soon on the mat.
Thanks! Well, my new wheels are definitely in good shape.

Musumeci Maths Obsessive, Lake Placid: pi*10 gets the total above $500!
What can I say...

Barron River Hotel Trivia Night:
Thanks go to the Barron River staff.

Joy Z, Cairns: Remember to engage with your piano pedals when you're finished cycling.
Thanks Music Teacher. Yes I'll try to get back to practice (and sort out the Beethoven fetish with Ode to Joy) soon.

Pete E, Melbourne: Good luck as always.
Thanks Peter! I've upgraded the bike for 2017 and expect that will ameliorate the ever present incremental/yearly body downgrades :-)

Doris P, Cairns: Enjoy the culinary pleasures and nightlife along the ride! Hopefully, I'll make it one day.

Thank you, and yes you must try it. Mt Carbine is special: the sky is (usually) clear, the stars are very bright, and it seems so very easy to sleep. The drinks are very cold at the hotel too.

Peter R, Townsville: Take it easy Phil

Thanks Pete. The bike is good for 2017 but the body might yet have to take it easier.

Andrew D, Perth: Enjoy the trip Phillip

Thanks Andrew. I realise I'm travelling through areas that are like a geologists play area/sand pit (especially Mt Carbine with new holes in the ground every few years) so I'll try to absorb the vibe!

Peter B, Minyama: Go dude

Shall do, thanks. Yes another scenic trip with ant hills, cattle grids (real and fake), and a clear sky while inland. Oh, and it seems easy to get good sleep.

Brad B, Melbourne: Enjoy the star gazing!

Thanks Brad. The stars will be clear, and our first camp ground is like Lion's Den but with no trees, and no soft soil, and ...

Mirriwinni: Does your bike come with child restraint harness points?

Dear Mirriwinni ... or is that you, Mirriwinni Musumeci's ???
Well, thank you for your secret support. No harness points on this bike but my other bike has the child restraints (which might also be useful when we aren't out riding).

Flynn EEs, JCU Townsville: Round round wheels going round round round

Well these secret donations are starting to become a "thing"! Thank you GW and/or BH and/or GB and/or even JP etc. (and I'm thinking of only one year of students...)

Walters family, Idstein: Hi Phillip, a good reason to ride by bike.

Yes it is a good cause. Thanks Uli and Martina. And remember we can always get you in to the ride if you can fly here by mid September!

CH-47, undisclosed: My turn to win the raffle this year.

Dear CH-47 (or should I address you as Chinook-47?), I wish you luck in the raffle but unless I figure out who you really are, it might be tricky to deliver the wine. Anyway, thanks for the "heavy lifting" from a big sponsorship! Could it be that you are a graduate from ADFA...

Anon, undisclosed:

Dear Anon, thanks for your support. I'll chase you up if you win the draw (somehow)!

Jan, undisclosed: Pleased to have the opportunity to support my favorite rider again. Go Phil!

Thanks Jan (I'm assuming this is more Greensmith support from Melbourne).

Liz and Wayne, Perth: What a marvellous slow way of working up an appetite for all the wonders of the far north!

Haha yeah, the ride does seem like it is taking forever in some of the hotter parts. But then, Cooktown with a BBQ down on the river (plus drinks) sure is an attractive finale. Thank you.

Rebecca M, Sydney: May the winds blow in your favour and the potholes be avoidable (...watch out for the one northbound just before Mt Molloy) - have great ride!

Thanks Rebecca. Yes we happen to have had southerly winds for the past week or so and I'm hopeful that continues for another 6 days! Large pot holes just south of Mt Molloy? OK, message stored. I am already careful leaving Mt Molloy as that single lane bridge has previously had whopper potholes that dislodge and break tail lights.

Oliver B, Cairns: Don't forget to do some ashtanga on Sunday morning, and enjoy the ride.

Thanks Oliver :-)

Lynne K, Ayr: Have a safe ride.

Thanks Lynne.
